FCC Approves UWB Solution for Personnel Tracking System

TRX Systems has announced that the NEON Personnel Tracker solution is now available with an ultra-wideband (UWB) option that enables enhanced ranging and higher accuracy positioning inside buildings and in other GPS-denied environments. The NEON Personnel Tracker provides ubiquitous 3D location, tracking and mapping for personnel operating indoors and in any location where GPS is unavailable. Personnel Tracker is an Android application tightly integrated with the NEON Location Service where a suite of patented algorithms fuse inertial sensor data, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi readings and inferred map and building data to deliver reliable 3D location.

The solution now also uses UWB. Unlike existing UWB solutions, NEON combines inertial, mapping, and UWB technology to deliver a fused, high accuracy solution with limited or no infrastructure. The Personnel Tracker delivers indoor and outdoor location improving efficiency, command effectiveness and safety for security, public safety and industrial applications. It provides seamless 3D positioning data as well as real-time and after-action 3D visualization of individuals and teams in a solution that is rapid to deploy and easy to use.

Each user is equipped with Android-based NEON tracking software and a small, wearable tracking unit. Accurate positioning is accomplished using NEON's patented algorithms, which combine data from multiple device sensors including inertial, magnetic, pressure, light, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi along with GPS signals (when available). Personnel Tracker presently supports the use of optional Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons to provide location constraints. With the new UWB option, the Personnel Tracker system’s accuracy is highly enhanced by using UWB Time-of-Flight (TOF) location inputs that deliver sub-meter accuracy with up to 35 m range indoors and 20 m outdoors. The UWB technology also allows team members to share their position with other members of the team, delivering a unique collaborative approach to calculating location.

TRX is one of the first companies in the world with an FCC approved inertial-UWB tracking solution. The NEON Tracking Unit is a first of its kind with integrated sensor fusion and UWB ranging in a single wearable device.
