According to multiple sources, Apple, is set to release its 5G-enabled iPhones, next year. Based on information from multiple sources (as mentioned in Nikkei) the 5G iPhone will use Qualcomm's X55 5G Modem.
The Qualcomm 5G modem released earlier this year, and is expected to be paired with the new Apple A14 Biconic chipset, which will also be the first 5-nanometer (5-nm) chip from the company. The smaller chip is more efficient and will also allow more processing power in a compact package.
According to recent reports, Apple is thought to be working on its own in-house modems having acquired the majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business back in July. Yet, the news rumor related to the usage of Qualcomm modem is now garnering special attention, since the two companies recently settled a legal dispute.
Apple has also planned to switch to a 5nm fabrication process for its chips next year, moving away from the current 7nm process that is in use since the A12 Bionic chip debuted in 2018. Huawei, one of Apple’s main rival, is also thought to be working on a 5nm chip of its own that’s set to launch in a similar period next year.
As well as 5G connectivity and a new chip fabrication process, the new iPhones are also expected to be Apple’s first redesign of its flagship phones, and could feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. In addition to the flagship devices, Apple could also release a low-cost successor to the iPhone SE towards the beginning of the year 2020.
