Chinese Company Launches 77 GHz Automotive Radar Development Platform

Chinese local manufacturer Gatland Microelectronics has developed a simple barrier radar hardware design based on a 60 GHz/77 GHz millimeter-wave radar SoC AiP (Antenna in Package), which shortens the development cycle and reduces costs for customers.

From the system architecture diagram given in Figure 1, in addition to the main control chip, only the power chip, FLASH, and crystal oscillator are needed to complete the entire system function. There are few system components, and no high-frequency plate is needed, which reduces the cost while reducing the size.

The AiP measures 12 x 12 mm and has four transmitting and four receiving channels. It supports a maximum of 4 × 4 MIMO, has the ability to solve pitch and horizontal angles, and has a continuous sweep bandwidth of up to 5 GHz, which is currently the widest in the industry. The theoretical distance resolution can reach 0.04 meters, and the speed resolution can reach 0.04 meters/second.

60 GHz/77 GHz millimeter-wave radars not only have high requirements on the rationality of antenna design when they are applied, but also because antennas have extremely high requirements for the production process, so the core technology has only been mastered by a few companies, affecting millimeter-wave radars. 

The Gartland Microelectronics AiP series integrates antennas that are difficult to design and produce into the chip package, which greatly reduces the difficulty and cost of radar development, and can be better applied to barrier radars.

With the Gatland Barrier Radar Application System, the implementation of customer barrier radar has become simple: First, the Gartland Radar Development Platform (RDP) was used for installation and commissioning. In the second step, refer to the parameters of the Gatland Barrier Radar, and use the Gatland software tools to perform registration and software-related settings. After that, fine-tune based the same to achieve the desired effect.

In addition, Gatland provides two types of data outputs. One is for original data before the Kaman filter so that the Customers can develop their own clustering and tracking. The other is for target data provided by Gatland, which can also be used directly by the customers.

In the future, the Gatland Barrier Radar System will add a logical judgment function based on the existing functional applications, and increase the function of interconnection with the Barrier, increase the adaptability of multiple scenarios, further improve the accuracy of the Barrier Radar detection, and provide customers with more Simple and convenient reference design platform.
