The SAF85xx from NXP Semiconductors is an Automotive Radar SoC that operates from 76 to 81 GHz. It has been optimized for fast chirp modulation used in automotive FMCW radar applications. This fully integrated RFCMOS chip integrates a radar transceiver with a radar microprocessor unit (MPU) based on Arm® Cortex® - A53, Arm Cortex - M7 cores, and SRAM. It consists of 4 transmitters, 4 receivers, ADC conversion, phase rotator, low-phase-noise VCO, SPT radar accelerator, and BBE32 Vector DSP to support various use cases and different radar data outputs such as object data, point cloud data, or FFT output. The SoC is based on 3rd generation 28 nm RFCMOS technology that enables various devices from entry NCAP sensors to high-performance front radar sensors for short, medium, and long-range radar applications in a compact package.
The SAF85xx utilizes an enhanced radar transceiver design with low sensitivity that offers robust detection compared to TEF82xx and higher sensing resolution. It includes 4D sensing capabilities that allow it to calculate distance, speed, angle, and height and integrates multiple antenna techniques to further improve its performance. This SoC uses an SGMII Ethernet interface with a data rate of up to 1 Gbps supporting different radar output formats and a dual CAN FD to support conventional architectures.
This AEC-Q100-qualified device has a built-in hardware security engine (HSE) that provides the required flexibility to cover the next-generation requirements via various software tools. It is an ISO 26262-compliant device that targets ASIL-level B certification standards and meets the latest security requirements through its HSE security platform. The SoC is available in a surface-mount package that measures 10.6 x 11.3 mm and is ideal for autonomous emergency braking, blind spot detection, front/rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assistance, part assistance, door open warning, front collision warning, adaptive cruise control applications.
