The TDPL97240 from Teledyne HiRel Electronics is a Radiation-Tolerant Integer-N Phase Locked Loop (PLL) that operates from 800 to 5000 MHz. It has been designed to synthesize signal frequencies up to 5 GHz and is optimized to provide superior phase noise performance. This commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) PLL is manufactured using an UltraCMOS process, a patented variation of Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technology on a Sapphire substrate that offers excellent RF performance and intrinsic radiation tolerance. It gives the PLL natural radiation tolerance and immunity to single-event latch-up (SEL) effects and is radiation tolerant to 100 krad (Si) total ionizing dose (TID). The device is qualified in accordance with the NASA EEE-INST-002 specification and undergoes rigorous testing and validation to ensure that it meets the necessary space requirements.
The TDPL97240 includes a selectable 5/6 or 10/11 pre-scaler modulus, counters, and a phase comparator and allows counters to be programmed through either a serial interface or hard wires. It has a phase noise floor figure of merit (FOM) of -230 dBc/Hz, an SSB phase noise of -111 dBc/Hz (for 10/11 pre-scaler), and -116 dBc/Hz (for 5/6 pre-scaler). The PLL requires a DC supply of 2.65 V to 2.95 V and consumes 75 mA of current. It is available in an epoxy-sealed non-hermetic surface-mount package that measures 7 x 7 mm and is ideal for commercial space and LEO applications.
