What are RF & Microwave Absorbing Materials?
RF and microwave absorbing materials are used to absorb/attenuate high frequency signals. When an RF/Microwave signal passed though an absorbing material, the signal level gets attenuated. These materials are available in various formats - Sheets, Pyramids, Wedges etc. and are designed to absorb RF/Microwave signals up to a specific frequency. Different materials have different levels of attenuation. So when selecting the right materials for absorption the following parameters should be considered:
Configuration: This is the form factor of the absorbing materials. It can be in the form of a sheet, pyramid, wedge or something else.
Frequency: This is the frequency range up to which the material is required to absorb signals. Different materials are designed for different frequency ranges.
Attenuation: This is the level of absorption that the material provides. It is usually measured in dB. So if a sheet has absorption specified to be 30 dB, 10 dBm signal that is incident on it will become -20 dBm be the time it gets past the sheet.
