What is a GPSDO?
A GPSDO or GPS disciplined oscillator is an oscillator that consists of a GPS receiver and a high stability crystal oscillator like an OCXO or a rubidium oscillator. The oscillator uses the timing information from GPS satellites as a reference to provide a very stable frequency output. They do this by disciplining the quartz or rubidium oscillator by locking its output to the GPS signal using a tracking loop.
GPSDOs can also be used to synchronize multiple RF receivers to ensure phase coherency across the receivers. This is because each GPSDO will get timing information from the Satellites and thus use the same reference. This way they will be able to generate the same stable output with a similar phase in different devices at different locations.
