Ericsson and America Movil bring 5G and IoT to Brazil

Ericsson has announced that it will be working with América Móvil to bring the first 5G test system to Brazil in 2016. The two companies also plan to deploy a test system for Internet of Things (IoT) and support Brazil in the realization of its digital agenda to accelerate opportunities in areas such as health care, education, energy, agriculture and within new industry applications.

Ericsson's 5G test system is where innovation meets implementation, allowing telecom operators and ecosystem partners such as academic institutions, health care, energy and agriculture players to test 5G capabilities in a live network. In addition, Ericsson and América Móvil will also deploy a test system for Internet of Things (IoT), enabling Brazilian industries and the public sector to prepare for ICT transformation. The IoT test system will specifically focus on low battery consumption applications, such as low power sensors for remote areas.

Telit to Supply Cellular Modules to Tier-One Automotive OEMs

Telit Communications announced that they recently secured supply agreements for its cellular modules with two tier-one automotive suppliers, with expected revenues of up to $33 million. These agreements are the 5th and 6th such supply agreements Telit has secured over the past 12 months representing in aggregate up to $220 million of revenues over the life of the agreements. Supply periods range from four to six years with shipments on one contract already begun and peak volumes being reached in 2018, with deliveries into the U.S., Germany, Japan, China and Korea. Telit looks forward to updating the market with further contract wins from its automotive business unit over the coming 12 months as the company capitalises on its strong momentum in this segment.

New Antennas Support EMF Radiation Measurements to Ensure Compliance

Anritsu has expanded its Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Measurement System with the introduction of isotropic antennas that provide frequency coverage from 9 kHz to 6 GHz. Compatible with certain LMR Master™, Spectrum Master™, and Cell Master™ handheld analyzers, the new antennas support measurements of EMF radiation to ensure wireless networks are in compliance with various national standards for personal safety established by government regulatory authorities.

The two isotropic antennas employ tri-axis sensors with an integrated RF switch device, microcontroller and memory. Each of the three sensors is positioned orthogonally inside the antenna housing to transmit/receive a spherical radiation pattern so all radiation is measured at the antenna’s geographical position, regardless of the direction in which it arrives.

3D Printed Waveguides Have Superior Electrical Performance

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has recently assisted Imperial College London to investigate the design, fabrication and testing of waveguides manufactured using 3D-printing techniques, by providing the underpinning metrology needed to determine their electromagnetic performance. Metallic rectangular waveguides (or waveguides, for short) are commonly used to propagate electromagnetic waves from point to point due to their relatively low-loss characteristics. They have a long history of use in many microwave applications, including radar, communications, astronomy and space. However, they can be difficult to manufacture with the precision that's needed using conventional machining techniques.
