Leading airborne defense solutions provider, BIRD Aerosystems, is showcasing its new SPREOS Compact Directional Infra-Red Counter Measure (DIRCM), the most Advanced, Compact and Lightweight DIRCM in the market, at the EW Europe event, in Stockholm, Sweden. Presented in its production configuration, the SPREOS combines a radar-based confirmation sensor and an active laser jammer, and ensures optimal protection against different MANPADS threat types.
The patented Self Protection Radar Electro-Optic System (SPREOS) DIRCM performs multiple functions, including threat confirmation, tracking and jamming of advanced IR guided missiles. It slews to the direction of the threat, activates its multi-band radar functionality, confirms and tracks while analyzing its unique information to enable the most effective jamming response. Following the confirmation and tracking, it deploys the dual-band countermeasure laser, causing the missile to miss the aircraft. Compact and Lightweight, SPREOS is an ideal solution for a range of airborne platforms. It is integrated in BIRD’s AMPS MD solution which is designed to automatically detect, verify, and foil SAM attacks.
According to Ronen Factor, Co-Chief Executive Officer and Founder at Bird Aerosystems, combining multiple independent laser generators, including the latest QCL technology, and utilizing a proprietary multi-band laser jamming, the SPREOS eliminates all of the false alarms and ensures that only actual threats are jammed. Uniquely designed to protect military and civilian aircraft against the growing threat of ground to air missiles (MANPADS), it can be easily integrated with all types of Missile Warning Systems (MWS), and is the most compact and cost-effective DIRCM available today.
Alongside the SPREOS, BIRD Aerosystems also presented its patented MACS (Missile Approach Confirmation Sensor). It performs unique confirmation of suspected incoming missile threats detected by the main electro-optical passive sensors, and practically eliminates any False Alarms. Concurrently, it also collects relevant information on the target (velocity and distance) and calculates its time-to-impact, enabling effective countermeasure response to the incoming missile. The system ensures that only real missiles will be declared by the system and reacted upon.
