Fujikura Starts Field Trials in the New 66-71 GHz Global 5G mm-Wave Band

Fujikura, a Tokyo-based telecom equipment manufacturing company, announced that it has acquired an experimental license for a new 5G band (66 - 71 GHz) identified at the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19). To conduct tests in this frequency band, Fujikura has developed a 5G mm-Wave communication module specifically for this frequency band.

This frequency band has already been allocated as an unlicensed band in the US, but WRC-19 has newly identified it as a globally allocable 5G band and is expected to be used all over the world.

Fujikura will start field tests using this frequency band to find out its characteristics and effective use cases such as FWA and V2X. They will also start providing samples of an SDK (Software Development Kit) that combines the 60 GHz millimeter-wave communication module operating from 57 - 71 GHz applied to the experimental radio station with a network controller.

The module is based on the IEEE 802.11ad (WiGig) standard and provides features such as high-power transmission output, scalable channel bandwidth and high-order modulation support. It has a channel bandwidth of 0.55/1.1/2.2 GHz and supports BPSK to 64QAM modulation method with a data speed of up to 4620 Mbps.

Low loss LCP materials and high output RF-IC used in the module helps in achieving long distance, high capacity transmission with distances over 500 m at 2 Gbps. The module also features a unique design of 16-element phased array antenna which makes automatic beamforming possible over a wide angle of ±45 degrees along with high wireless control technology, making it possible to automatically connect up to 30 devices on the customer premises to a single access point.

Users can confirm the performance of the module by connecting with network equipment since the SDK works as a millimeter-wave wireless router. Users can also monitor the detailed information about the wireless link such as SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) or MCS (Modulation and Coding Scheme) by using the SDK commands.

Major Specifications of the SDK Include:

  • Radio interface: 57-71 GHz (802.11ad standard-compliant)
  • Network interface: 2 x 1 Gbps Ethernet
  • Power supply: (AC adapter) AC100-240V/50-60Hz
  • Size: 120mm(W) x 130mm(D) x 140mm(H)/815g

Fujikura’s millimeter-wave communication modules are applicable not only to the experimental radio station but also to backhaul network equipment, access points, customer premises equipment and V2X applications. They want to help customers develop products easily by providing a comprehensive SDK which covers multiple test environments.
