RFHIC recently introduced two compact, high efficiency GaN (Gallium Nitride) solid-state microwave generators for the microwave medical market. The RIM25100-20G provides 100 W microwave power between 2.4 to 2.5 GHz and RIM25200-20G provides 200 W at the same frequency range. Both products have the same form factor and are available in a compact size measuring 200 x 100 x 30 mm.
There are a lot of medical applications that use microwaves. The RIM25100-20G/RIM25200-20G are ideal for tumor ablations or skin treatments. Both GaN products have more than 60% efficiency at their CW peak powers which is about 15% higher than LDMOS SSPA efficiency.
In the past, magnetrons have been used in the microwave medical market as a microwave source. However, they have technical limitations. For safe microwave delivery into the human body, pulsed signals are better than continuous wave (CW) signals. The RIM25100-20G/RIM25200-20G can generate a signal with a minimum pulse width of 20 µs with a duty cycle from 1~100 % (100% duty = CW).
With an RS232 communication interface, users have precise control (1 W scale output power, 1 MHz scale frequency, 0.1 ms scale pulse signal) and can accurately monitor forward/reverse power (±5% accuracy) and the temperature. There is an auto-shutdown safety feature included for over temperature, over output power, high reverse power, etc.
These microwave generators have a special feature called ‘Auto frequency optimization’. This measures forward/reverse power over the entire frequency range and shifts its operating frequency where the reverse power is the lowest. This feature allows users to deliver the maximum microwave power to the patient with the lowest possible loss. This feature can replace an auto tuner which is required for the magnetron-based system for the impedance matching.
