Akoustis Technologies, Inc. (“Akoustis” or the “Company”), an integrated device manufacturer (IDM) of patented bulk acoustic wave (BAW) high-band RF filters for mobile and other wireless applications, has got a statement-of-work (SOW) / development order from a leading tier-1 RF module maker and filter provider for a new 5G mobile XBAW filter.
The new filter will be developed using Akoustis’ state-of-the-art XBAW process technology and new in-house wafer-level packaging (WLP) capability at its manufacturing facility in Canandaigua, NY. Akoustis will be responsible for the design, modeling, fabrication, assembly, and characterization of this new filter according to the customer’s specifications.
Jeff Shealy, founder and CEO of Akoustis, stated, “This new tier-1 customer represents a significant opportunity for Akoustis given its market position in smartphones and other mobile devices.” Mr. Shealy continued, “The successful development and delivery of this filter will enable our customer to address a high-volume 5G mobile band with leading BAW coexistence capability. Moreover, our new WLP will allow the filters to be fully integrated into the customer’s 5G RF front-end modules.”
Akoustis is actively delivering volume production of its Wi-Fi 6 tandem filter solutions, shipping multiple 5G small cell XBAW filter solutions, delivering initial designs of its new 5G mobile filter solutions to multiple customers and is now entering the market with its new Wi-Fi 6E coexistence XBAW filter solutions.
Given the rapidly growing sales funnel activity as well as ongoing interaction with customers regarding expected ramps in 5G mobile, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E in calendar 2022, the Company is increasing the annual production capacity at its New York fab to approximately 500 million filters per year.
