Smiths Interconnect Introduces Fixed and Temperature Variable Attenuators for Aerospace & Defense Applications
Smiths Interconnect has announced the launch of a new series of fixed attenuators and Thermopad® products. The patented products, which are part of Smiths Interconnect’s innovative SPL Series, provide heightened performance for use in space, defense, and aerospace applications. They are ideal in applications requiring stringent performance requirements and are highly reliable based on Smiths qualified reliability process. The SPL Series is particularly significant because it offers a lower cost of ownership based on MIL-PRF-55342 space heritage, a key performance specification for fixed, film, chip resistors ensuring high quality and reliability levels.

The fixed attenuators are available in two distinct packages, including a low-power chip package and a high-power 0.250 sq BeO package. With input power ratings spanning from 0.1 to 120 watts, these attenuators provide flexibility to suit various applications. The attenuation values span from 0 dB to 20 dB, with 30 dB for specific devices.

The Thermopad® is a totally passive, surface mountable temperature variable attenuator. It requires no bias or control voltages and does not generate distortion. The Thermopad can be used in place of a standard chip attenuator to combine level setting or buffering and temperature compensation in a single chip design.

Tullio Panarello, VP and General Manager of the Fibre Optics and RF Components Business Unit at Smiths Interconnect, said: “The chip attenuator and Thermopad® products have established reliability through qualified electrical, visual, and mechanical screening. The customer’s lead time is decreased by reducing the testing time and therefore reducing cost, while adding similar reliability as a fully screened product.”

The product is available in various styles from DC-6 GHz for lower frequency requirements up to DC-20 GHz for the broadband requirements of higher frequency applications. It provides annual test data product qualification reporting in a cost-effective, easy-to-implement solution.

They offer the following features:

  • 100% electrical, visual, and mechanical tested
  • Annual test data product qualification reports
  • Lower cost of ownership
  • Shorter lead times
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Terminal wraps for solder inspection.
