Vubiq Networks, Inc., an innovator of millimeter wave wireless broadband technology and solutions, has announced HaulPass Fiber, the industry’s first software-driven networking (SDN) millimeter wave radio. HaulPass Fiber is an innovative RF front end (RFE) that seamlessly integrates into the most complex fiber networks.
“Our HaulPass Fiber radio offers a paradigm shift for a wide range of high-capacity wireless communications applications,” said Mike Pettus, founder and CTO of Vubiq Networks. “Incorporating our patented technology, HaulPass Fiber is truly ‘wireless fiber.’ Simply plug the E-Band radio into any existing network and instantly extend the fiber network wirelessly.”
The HaulPass Fiber E-Band radio solves the many problems associated with integrating wireless radios into existing fiber networks, namely the difficulty of integrating the Ethernet switch/router contained in existing radios, issues of high latency, and the costly and time-consuming process of manually aligning the radio links.
By design, HaulPass Fiber does not have an internal Ethernet switch/router. Moving the network stack outside of the radio provides control where network operators want it – at the network controller or as an extension of a nearby switch. In terms of throughput, the radio delivers a full-duplex (FDD) capacity of 10 Gbps with 5G-ready latency at 6.5 microseconds.
As for alignment issues, Vubiq Networks is currently in the process of integrating its patented, AI-driven articulating antenna into the radio. This will provide automatic alignment at installation and maintain precise alignment over long distances despite pole sway and thermal effects.
Rather than moving the entire radio for alignment, HaulPass Fiber’s articulating antenna will use machine learning algorithms to move only the antenna element. These movements will be much more precise, the costs of the system much less expensive, and the response time for maintaining alignment much faster.
HaulPass Fiber’s development environment will allow network operators to deliver custom API commands directly to the radio via any switch, router or network controller. This will dramatically simplify integration in nearly every network topology and allow the freedom to customize, configure and monitor high-capacity wireless links.
“This transformational approach to millimeter wave point-to-point connectivity drastically reduces the bill of materials, eases production costs, and results in the industry’s most compact, ruggedized outdoor radio,” said Vubiq Networks CEO John Dilworth. “HaulPass Fiber’s footprint is only 6.7 x 6.9 x 3.7 inches and is powered by 48 VDC, drawing only 35 Watts.”
HaulPass Fiber’s design has been validated with a contract manufacturer and preliminary runs have been completed. Vubiq Networks is offering the radio in the form of licensing agreements or an outright sale of the company’s intellectual property and patent portfolio.
