Syntonics, a division of Ironwave Technologies, has developed SPiDR-Tactical, a battery-powered, ultra-wideband, standalone radar that has been optimized to detect hostile small arms projectiles of all types and to geolocate hostile shooters. SPiDR-Tactical’s Electronics and antenna array are packaged into a conformal, flexible film that lies under the helmet’s fabric cover that ensures protection. It can stare 360° around soldier and give bearing + range to the shooters.

- High performance: Detects 99.9+% of fast, incoming projectiles passing within 10 m; reports up to 500 m range to shooter location; nil false alarms

- Stealthy: Low-power, ultra-wideband signal is undetectable
- Safe: RF exposure is significantly less than a cell phone
Avoids the shortcomings of existing acoustical or optical systems
- Robust detection: Unaffected by noise, echoes, wind, downwash, sunshine, lasers, outgoing fire, far-distant shooters, unseen shooters, inaudible shooters
- Better User interface: Intuitively integrated into soldier’s helmet+headset or future modular soldier systems
Threats are annunciated in one or more ways to the war-fighter. SPiDR-Tactical is conceived as a stand-alone system as of now, but could become a module in a future soldier system.
SPiDR-Tactical is being developed under the U.S. Department of Defense sponsorship and is ITAR-restricted.
