For 60 years the log periodic dipole array (LPDA) antenna has been the backbone of the radio, TV, and wireless sectors. It provides a wide bandwidth and high directional gain which are required by the sectors. However, those advantages come at the price of large size.
Now Fractal Antenna Systems (FRACTAL) has found a way of shrinking the LPDA dramatically while maintaining virtually all of its gain and wide bandwidth. Using rule of physics discovered and published in 1999, called the HCR Principle, FRACTAL researchers honed in on fractal designs that obey the physics but also shrink the size of LPDA’s.
A number of researchers have previously tried to develop log periodic antennas based on the HCR Principle, but did not understand the workings and failed. A few incorrect published papers really turned people away from this progress, however this did not dissuade Fractal Antenna Systems who continued work on this technology.
FRACTAL anticipates the smaller, new, patent pending antennas to be enabling in many circumstances that previously could not utilize the LPDA’s large size. They feel that their new antenna technology will replace log periodic dipole array antennas in a few years.
Their first product release is planned for the early part of 2017.
