IMSAR High-Altitude Radar Systems Use 3D Printed Antenna Arrays

Leading expert on SAR and radar image processing, IMSAR, and RF design and additive manufacturing company, Optisys, have partnered to create a small-Size, low-Weight, and low-Power (SWaP) radar designed specifically for use on High Altitude, Long Endurance (HALE) platforms. The high-altitude radar system is made possible by combining Optisys's ability to miniaturize antenna arrays through 3D printing and IMSAR's military-proven radar technology.

IMSAR's high-altitude radar is based on its existing, low-SWaP NanoSAR C technology, which provides the foundation for its Commercial, Off-the-Shelf (COTS) NSP-3, NSP-5 and NSP-7 airborne radar systems. The high-altitude radar is capable of multiple modes of operation from over 60,000 feet Above Ground Level and is designed to operate continuously in stratospheric environments. IMS 2019 Records an Increase in Attendance and Exhibiting Companies

The MTT International Microwave Symposium (IMS) once again proved to be a huge success, with over 9,500 attendees attending the 2019 edition of the event in the city of Boston. IMS 2019 is the largest event dedicated to the RF/Microwave industry. This years event saw a 16% increase in technical attendance over IMS 2018 and a record-breaking 650 exhibiting companies. IMS, the annual conference and exhibition of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques (MTT-S), is the flagship conference of Microwave Week featuring innovators and disruptors in microwave and RF theory and practice.

This year’s conference was co-located with IEEE’s Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits Symposium (RFIC) and ARFTG Microwave Measurement Conference. Qualcomm Uses Keysight 5G Network Emulation Solutions to Demonstrate First 5G Laptop

Keysight Technologies announced that their 5G network emulation solutions were used by Qualcomm to successfully demonstrate the industry’s first 5G laptop with an integrated modem at Computex, a global ICT and IoT show in Taipei, Taiwan last month.

The demonstration showcased always connected workflows, all-day battery life and Windows 10 support using Qualcomm’s latest platform, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx system-on-a-chip (SoC) and X55 5G modem, as well as Keysight’s 5G network emulation solutions. This demonstration displayed high-speed, low-latency connectivity made possible by 5G new radio (NR), offering transformative PC user experiences for both consumers and the enterprise with downstream speeds of up to 7 Gbps. 20 Billion Wi-Fi Enabled Devices to Ship from 2019-2024

Market analyst, ABI Research, expect the total number of Wi-Fi devices to be shipped globally during the 2019-2024 period, to touch an astonishing mark of over 20 billion. Continued growth in traditional markets of strength, alongside traction in mesh networking systems, smart home, automotive, and IoT applications is expected to drive the Wi-Fi market forward to nearly 4 billion annual device shipments by 2024.

2019, marks the 20th anniversary of Wi-Fi, though the technology shows no signs of slowing down. According to ABI, Wi-Fi 6 is quickly gaining momentum in networking devices, while client devices are already arriving into the market and are anticipated to ramp up considerably over the next 12-18 months. The need for faster, more reliable, more efficient, and more widespread Wi-Fi coverage is becoming increasingly vital in a world filled with more Wi-Fi devices at both ends of the performance spectrum, from high resolution streaming and low latency gaming to battery constrained IoT devices. Next Generation of UWB Technology Enables Security & Precision Sensing in Wireless Devices

At their annual developer conference in the Silicon Valley, NXP Semiconductors has announced the development of its UWB technology for a broad range of markets, including mobile, automotive, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and industrial. Siklu's 60 GHz Gigabit Wireless Solution Incorporates Facebook's Terragraph Technology

Siklu, a leading 5G mmWave wireless network equipment provider, has announced that its third generation Gigabit Wireless solution will incorporate Facebook's Terragraph millimeter-wave technology. Terragraph leverages V-band spectrum at 60 GHz to wirelessly extend fiber throughout cities, including in difficult-to-reach neighborhoods.

US Marines Award $958 Million Contract to Northrop Grumman for GaN Radar Systems

The U.S. Marine Corps has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation a $958 million contract for Lot 6 full-rate production of Gallium Nitride-based (GaN) AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task-Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) systems. G/ATOR is a crucial capability that protects warfighters and defends against today’s threat environment and the threat environment of the future. G/ATOR replaces five legacy systems operated by the Marine Corps with a single system, providing significant improvements in performance when compared to the legacy radar families in each of its modes. This results in reduced training, logistics and maintenance costs.

The AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR is an advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) multi-mission radar that leverages GaN to provide comprehensive real-time, full-sector, 360-degree situational awareness against a broad array of threats. The highly expeditionary, three-dimensional, short-to-medium-range multi-role radar system is designed to detect, identify, and track cruise missiles, manned aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles as well as rockets, mortars and artillery fire. NB-IoT / LTE-M Issues Boost LoRa / Sigfox Market Share for IoT Networks

According to market advisory firm ABI Research, LoRa and Sigfox be the main technologies that power LPWA networks connections through 2024. They will take up a significantly larger market share over cellular technologies like NB-IoT and LTE-M. However, in 2026, NB-IoT and LTE-M will start to capture market share with over 60% of the 3.6 billion expected LPWA network connections powered by cellular technologies. Post 2026, LoRa and Sigfox will account for over 80% of the non-cellular LPWA network connections (of the remaining 40%).

In 2018, NB-IoT and LTE-M continued to be plagued by network hardware and connectivity module issues. As telcos and technology vendors address these inherent problems in 2019, other questions are driving enterprises and OEMs to delay deployment of NB-IoT and LTE-M applications, including eSIM/iSIM and the merging of NB-IoT and LTE-M into 5G standards.
