Connect a Fiber-Optic Line Directly to an Antenna with this Solution

HUBER+SUHNER has launched a first of its kind, Direct GPS-over-Fiber (GPSoF) solution which allows a fiber-optic connection to be made directly to an antenna eliminating the need for a separate power line. It does so by providing power along with the signal to the antenna. This new capability has the potential to revolutionize the remote antenna application landscape by addressing power constraints at the remote end. This solution will provide significant benefits to installations within the aerospace and defense markets.

Power-over-Fiber eliminates power constraints by making use of available fiber optic backbones to deliver the required power to the antenna. This eliminates the need for external power sources at the remote end, whilst at the same time, adding all of the benefits of fiber optics into a conventional radio frequency link. 40 GHz Ka-Band Amplifiers in Air-Cavity Plastic QFN Packages

Custom MMIC has added two new Ka-band amplifiers and three new low noise amplifiers to its growing portfolio of RF and Microwave products.

The new introductions include two Ka-band amplifiers: The CMD242K4 (Distributed Amplifier) and CMD299K4 (Low Noise Amplifier) which operate up to 40 GHz and are packaged in a small 4x4 mm air-cavity QFN plastic package designed for surface mount applications. The new “K” series designation signifies a new high frequency plastic package being utilized by Custom MMIC for products that operate at frequencies above 20 GHz catering to aerospace, defense and instrumentation customers. Affordable & Flexible mm-Wave Test Chamber to Debut at EuMW 2019

mmWave technology solutions experts, mmWave Test Solutions, will be showcasing its innovative mm-Wave Radiation Pattern Test Chamber at the upcoming EuMW 2019 event in Paris. The MilliBox is an affordable and flexible solution for mm-Wave radiation pattern acquisition from 18 to 95 GHz. Its modular approach allows easy extension of the chamber for increased far-field distances if required. The system is available with one of two different sizes of 3D Gimbals: GIM1 for DUTs up to 110 mm width, and GIM3 for DUTs up to 270 mm width.

This is the first anechoic millimeter-wave test chamber suited for wide deployment across the development organization. MilliBox is available in different sizes, MilliBox-2 (far-field distance 795 mm), MilliBox-3 (far-field distance 1400 mm) and MilliBox-4 (far-field distance 2050 mm). Researchers Demonstrate World's First Quantum Radar

A team of researchers from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria demonstrated a Quantum radar that relies on using entangled photons and operates at such low power levels that it can hide behind background noise, making it useful for biomedical and security applications.

One of the advantages of the quantum revolution is the ability to sense the world in a new way. The general idea is to use the special properties of quantum mechanics to make measurements or produce images that are otherwise impossible. Click here to read more.

World's First Multi-Cell GaN-HEMT Bonded Directly to Diamond Substrate

Mitsubishi Electric has showcased a GaN-HEMT in a multi-cell structure (multiple transistors cells arranged in parallel) bonded directly to a single-crystal diamond heat-dissipating substrate with high thermal conductivity. The gallium nitride (GaN) based high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) was developed by Mitsubishi in partnership with the Research Center for Ubiquitous MEMS and Micro Engineering of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan.

The direct bonding of a multi-cell GaN-HEMT to a single-crystal diamond substrate is believed to be the world's first (Mitsubishi Electric Research, 2019). The new GaN-on-Diamond HEMT will improve the power-added efficiency of high-power amplifiers in mobile communication base stations and satellite communications systems, thereby helping to reduce power consumption. Researchers Develop Low-Power, Low-Cost Network for High Speed 5G Connectivity

Researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed a cheaper and more efficient method for Internet-of-Things devices to receive high-speed wireless connectivity. With 75 billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices expected to be in place by 2025, a growing strain will be placed on requirements of wireless networks. Contemporary WiFi and cellular networks won't be enough to support the influx of IoT devices, the researchers highlighted in their new study.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave), a network that offers multi-gigahertz of unlicensed bandwidth -- more than 200 times, that is allocated to today's WiFi and cellular networks, can be used to address the looming issue. In fact, 5G networks are going to be powered by mmWave technology. However, the hardware required to use mmWave is expensive and power-hungry, which are significant deterrents to it being deployed in many IoT applications. Click here to read more.

Raytheon to Develop Beyond Line of Sight Airborne High-Frequency Radios

Raytheon in partnership with FlexRadio will develop and qualify a high-frequency radio for the U.S. Air Force. The new radio will provide beyond-line-of-sight, long-distance communications for aircrews.

This project is a part of $36 million Project Agreement from Consortium Management Group, Inc., which on behalf of Consortium for Command, Control, and Communications in Cyberspace (C5) aims to speed development of technologies to improve U.S. Government capabilities required to sustain U.S. military supremacy in weapon systems information technologies. Chinese Satellite Shares Earth’s RF Interference Spectrum from the Lunar Orbit

The Chinese DSLWP-B (LO-94) satellite has provided a profile of Earth’s HF spectrum as seen from the moon. The microsatellite subsequently was crashed into the moon’s surface after having completed its mission. DSLWP stands for “Discovering the Sky at Longest Wavelengths Pathfinder.” Among other things, DSLWP-B was designed to test low-frequency radio astronomy and space-based interferometry, and it carried Amateur Radio and educational payloads.

NASA Activates its Atomic Clock Developed for Autonomous Deep Space Travel

NASA has announced the activation of its Deep Space Atomic Clock, and has confirmed its readiness to begin a year-long tech demo. Launched in June, the Deep Space Atomic Clock is a critical step toward enabling spacecrafts to safely navigate themselves in deep space, rather than rely on the time-consuming process of receiving directions from Earth.

Developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, the clock is the first timekeeper stable enough to map a spacecraft's trajectory in deep space while being small enough to fly on-board the spacecraft. A more stable clock can operate farther from Earth, where it needs to work well for longer periods than satellites closer to home. Click here to read more.
