Laird Performance Materials has developed a hybrid thermal & EMI absorbing material that supports 5G handheld device and network infrastructure applications. CoolZorb 5G is specifically designed for the millimeter wave (mmWave) and microwave frequencies that 5G will implement. The multifunctional CoolZorb 5G serves as a heat-mitigating gap filler and EMI-reducing absorber to optimize 5G system performance.

Used as a traditional thermal interface material between heat sources, such as an IC and heat sink or other heat transfer device or metal chassis, CoolZorb 5G is an excellent thermal conductor for heat dissipation. CoolZorb 5G is used to suppress unwanted energy coupling, resonances or surface currents causing board level EMI issues. Sub-6 GHz Point-of-Interface Solutions for Outdoor Small Cell LTE Deployments

Microlab has introduced an IP-68 Modular point of interface (POI) solution for outdoor small cell and D-RAN deployments. The MCC200 Series is an outdoor rated modular system that can accommodate any LTE communication band up to 6 GHz. It consists of multiple IP67 rated slide-in cards for multi-port filters and hybrid couplers which gives flexibility to the D-RAN/Small Cell owners and installers to conveniently add new MNO’s or bands. The filters support common licensed wireless cellular bands used in network densification. Each multi-port filter card is capable of handling up to 40W per input and is passively cooled. MCC200 Series hybrid couplers are available in standard bandwidths from 600 to 2700 MHz. Extended bandwidth cards are also available to cover up to 3800 MHz for CBRS and Band 43, and ultra-wide bandwidth products cover up to 6 GHz for LTE-LAA. Since deployment requirements and environmental conditions vary, the MCC Series is now offered in both indoor (MCC100) and outdoor (MCC200) versions.

This new platform expands the set of modular POI offerings introduced by Microlab in 2018, providing the same type of innovative flexibility for outdoor deployments which require upgrade and reconfiguration as capacity and bandwidth requirements evolve over time. Click here to read more.

Researchers Develop Solution to Test GPS Spoofing Vulnerabilities in Automated Vehicles

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has developed a cybersecurity system to test for vulnerabilities in automated vehicles and other technologies that use GPS receivers for positioning, navigation, and timing.

GPS spoofing is a malicious attack that broadcasts incorrect signals to GPS receivers, while GPS manipulation modifies a real GPS signal. GPS satellites orbiting the Earth pinpoint physical locations of GPS receivers embedded in everything from smartphones to ground vehicles and aircraft. SwRI designed the new tool to meet United States federal regulations. Testing for GPS vulnerabilities in a mobile environment had previously been difficult because federal law prohibits over-the-air re-transmission of GPS signals without prior authorization. Raytheon Using Tropospheric Scattering Technology to Deliver WiFi to Soldiers

Raytheon will deliver new troposcatter communication systems to the U.S. Army as part of a 10-year, indefinite-delivery, indefinite quantity contract worth up to $663 million to ensure troops have access to secure voice and data communications in contested environments.

Troposcatter – short for tropospheric scatter – technology uses particles that make up the Earth's atmosphere as a reflector for radio signals. Those signals are aimed just above the horizon in the direction of a receiver station. As they pass through the troposphere, some of the energy is scattered back toward the Earth, allowing the receiver station to pick up the signal.
