Positioning in 5G NR: A Look at the Technology and Related Test Aspects

One can distinguish positioning methods on a use case level such as commercial andcivil LBS or military services. This document is focused on civil positioning services in conjunction with wireless communications technologies like EUTRA and 5G NR. On a technical level, a distinction can be made based on the applied technological principles.The technology approach clusters the positioning technologies into satellite based GNSS methods, terrestrial radio frequency based methods and non-RF positioning methods such as sensor fusion or Bayesian theory.
This document is structured into two major parts. First, there is a concise description of the positioning technologies relevant in 5G NR. Second, there is a more detailed description of the relevant test and measurement methodologies, setups and test procedures,including the corresponding challenges.
