Quectel Introduces Ultra-Compact GNSS Timing Module

Quectel Wireless Solutions has launched the L26-T module, a nanosecond-level precision timing module. Based on the Teseo III chipset from STMicroelectronics, the module supports multi-constellation signal reception and delivers timing services with high integrity and accuracy to vertical applications including communication base stations, financial agencies, electronic power systems and railway dispatch systems.

In addition to tracking and navigation, GNSS is widely used for timing and the synchronization of critical networks. The L26-T can receive signals from GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo and QZSS satellite constellations concurrently, which enhances the coverage and signal integrity, enabling high-precision timing performance. The L26-T provides GNSS raw data output to be used by 3rd party engines running on the host side.

With increasing numbers of 5G base stations being deployed globally, there is a growing requirement for higher level timing accuracy to secure stable connections over 5G networks. The Quectel L26-T module can deliver 6.8 nanosecond timing accuracy and is therefore able to meet the stringent requirements of timing synchronization in 5G networks.

By leveraging Quectel's leading multi-constellation technology and ST's powerful algorithm, the module is able to offer stable and accurate timing services at extremely competitive prices. It is suitable for any 5G network synchronization application such as Grandmaster clocks, 5G Macro, Micro and Pico timing cells and any other applications requiring stringent time synchronization to nanosecond level.

The new module integrates Differential GPS (DGPS) and Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) capabilities including WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS and GAGAN, guaranteeing optimized timing accuracy and signal integrity. A synchronized time pulse is maintained even when only one satellite is in view. This is particularly helpful in cases where there is very obstructed sky view.

Quectel's L26-T module utilizes Assisted GNSS (AGNSS) which improves signal acquisition and tracking sensitivity, and so reduces the time-to-first fix (TTFF). This is particularly helpful in harsh environments. In addition, the module is equipped with a low noise amplifier (LNA) to boost the signal strength in harsh environments. Measuring 16.0 × 12.2 × 2.3 mm, the L26-T is designed in 24-pin LCC form factor which can satisfy the needs of size-sensitive devices and optimize development costs.

"In China, a fast-growing market which is leading the way into the 5G era, ST and Quectel are working together to provide innovative GNSS technologies. ST's Teseo III platform is a complete solution that combines reliability, cost-effectiveness, high performance and versatility, and is a key enabler for the L26-T high-precision timing module," said MH TEY, Regional Senior Director of Marketing & Applications, Automotive Products, Asia Pacific, STMicroelectronics.

"We are delighted with the success of our efforts with STMicroelectronics. The L26-T module represents our cooperation in high-accuracy timing applications based on ST's GNSS Teseo III solution. The module has enriched Quectel's GNSS product line and will provide additional choices for communication networks, especially in 5G," said Jeffrey Song, Quectel Product Director. "Leveraging Quectel's powerful product portfolio, we are able to provide customers with excellent wireless connections and positioning and timing services, which are ideal for the global deployment of diversified IoT applications."

The Quectel's L26-T timing modules have entered the mass production stage to provide nanosecond level timing services for 5G base stations.
