Ericsson Selected by Data Stream Broadband to Deploy 5G in Rural Virginia

Data Stream Broadband Inc, a Virginia-based rural-focused broadband service provider, through its strategic partnership with Xtreme LTE, has selected Ericsson as its technology supplier for the upcoming deployment of Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) radio solutions for 5G capable wireless broadband in Spotsylvania County, Va.

Data Stream Broadband is taking a major step towards delivering the next generation of wireless connectivity in rural Virginia,” said Sean Lee, President and CEO of Data Stream. “The selection of Ericsson through our strategic partner Xtreme LTE as our 5G technology supplier will provide us with industry-leading 5G state-of-the-art wireless access to ensure Data Stream’s network is providing customers with the benefits that the latest 5G technology has to offer.”

“Bringing the latest broadband radio technology to rural America is central to our company’s mission,” said David Tews, President of Xtreme LTE. “We understand the very real need for high-speed broadband in these rural communities, and we’re excited to support Data Stream Broadband and Spotsylvania County with Ericsson’s full turn-key broadband solutions.”

“Spotsylvania County is excited about the opportunity to have Data Stream provide this much-needed service to our residents, particularly those in rural areas that have been unserved or underserved,” said Kevin Marshall, Chairman of the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors. “Our society expects that internet access be considered the same as any other utility and available to everyone. This 5G high-speed service is a step in the right direction and will help bridge the last-mile gap for our rural communities, ensuring that all residents have access to the internet for work and school.”

“The global pandemic has illustrated the importance of bringing reliable wireless connectivity to all. That is why we at Ericsson are committed to supporting rural carriers and the communities they serve,” said Rob Johnson, Vice President and Head of Customer Unit Regional Carriers for Ericsson North America. “By providing comprehensive, best-in-class solutions to carriers across the country, we believe we can play a key role in bridging the digital divide.”

Under the agreement, through a strategic partnership with Xtreme LTE, Ericsson will provide Data Stream Broadband with commercially available 64T64R Massive MIMO radios from its Ericsson Radio System portfolio. Equipped with Multi-User MIMO capabilities, these radios will increase cell capacity by connecting more devices simultaneously to the same cell infrastructure, delivering higher date rates without compromising network performance. Data Stream Broadband will begin 5G capable broadband deployment in rural Spotsylvania County in early 2021.
