Earlier this year, Anokiwave introduced the AWMF-0108 - The world’s first commercially available Ka-band quad core IC for 5G. It has been named the best new communications product for 2016 by Electronic Design.
The AWMF-0108 from Anokiwave is a highly integrated silicon quad core IC for 5G phase array applications. It operates from 27.5 GHz to 30 GHz and supports four Tx/Rx radiating elements. It includes all requisite beam steering controls for 5 bit phase and gain control, and operates in half duplex fashion to enable a single antenna to support both Tx and Rx operation. This device provides 24 dB gain and +9 dBm output power during transmit mode and 31 dB coherent gain, 5.0 dB NF, and -28 dBm IIP3 during receive mode. Additional features include gain compensation over temperature, temperature reporting, Tx power telemetry, and fast beam switching using eight on-chip beam weight storage registers. It features ESD protection on all pins, operates from +1.8 V and is packaged in a 48 lead 6x6 mm PQFN for easy installation in planar phased array antennas.
Low cost beamforming is one of the core requirements for the successful deployment of 5G. Commercially viable beamforming will require IC solutions with increased functional density and capability within a single die/package, thus enabling large-scale planar arrays.
Anokiwave is well positioned for this market with products available now for early 5G trials.
