Sequans Communications has announced the renewal of its 5G Research Partnership Agreement with leading global smartphone manufacturer TCL Communication. The agreement is an extension of an earlier agreement the two companies executed in March of 2015 whereby TCL Communication and Sequans agreed to jointly develop next generation 5G wireless technologies in order to accelerate their development. The collaboration of the companies has already yielded a number of important proposals to the future standard, based on innovation in key 5G areas such as wearables, smart use of unlicensed spectrum, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and 5G New Radio.
Sequans has been working on the advanced technologies identified in the 5G framing exercises of the 3GPP, an organization to which they have been contributing for more than a decade. Through the extended collaboration with TCL, Sequans aims to build a larger European consortium to address key challenges of 5G within the context of the 5G Infrastructure Association, an organization coordinating 5G research in Europe.
Both TCL Communication and Sequans have recently opened R&D centers in Sophia Antipolis, the Cote d’Azur’s Science and Technology hub, putting the two R&D teams in close proximity and further streamlining the two companies’ successful 5G collaboration.
